What genre of dance is dancing?

What would the kind of dancing would the dance on dancing with the stars be? or dances like the Foxtrot. are they balroom dancing?

1. ballroom dancing are dance where there are 2 people. the foxtrot, the quickstep, jive, tango, etc. are balroom dances because the two people feed off each others and their steps go together. hip hop, etc. wouldn't be because it is a culture and you don't only need 2 ppl, you can have 1 person or 10 people diong it and it would still be great. if you get what i mean...
2. Yes, most of the dances on that show are ballroom, though it's a curious mix of International and American styles uniquely its own.
3. The genre of Dance is :DANCE. Just as the genre of music is: MUSIC Though sometimes the word IDIOM is interchanged with GENRE, the "gen" in genre stems from "Genus or "GENESIS" meaning the origin of something,: ie: Dance, Literature, Language. IDIOM is a specific characteristic that creates its own set of rules, styles, expression which separates it from the Genisis but uses the same methods or tools. Take a Language that is spoken widely, but within the common knowledge of the WORDS, dialects develop creating a unique expression rendering it almost foreign, but still using the WORDS of that Language. DANCE is the language of MOVEMENT. The GENRE. Ballroom DANCING ' is the IDIOM. It uses the same tools (movement) but has its own , unique 'dialect. I hope this wasn't too long, but this question has always made me stop and wonder about it. Between us, get some real examples of the Fox Trot, the Two Step, .etc. You should see the real, beautiful thing. The dancing on television is very bastardized. and the music is not representative either. Enjoy the Show of course, it's cool. But treat yourself to an old "Harvest Moonball" tape or something.
