How would you go further to competitions in ballroom dancing?

If you already take classes for ballroom dancing and would like to move to completions how do you find out about the competitions?

  1. Your studio could help. In the US, there's a good chance there's a USA Dance chapter nearby, too.
  2. There are many ballroom dance competitions in the USA. I strongly suggest you attend one as a spectator before signing up to dance. Not every dance studio is teaching ballroom that is suitable for competition. Watch the video on the home page of this competition that just passed so you can see a collage of what competitive dancing is about (note that as a beginner you would not be going up against people who look like this - but its good to know whats out there). www.manhattandancesport.com Competitions are organized primarily by two governing bodies in the USA. USA Dance (USAD) and the National Dance Council of America (NDCA). USAD is the governing bodies for amateurs and is the organization that holds the competitions that select the world representatives to the Amateur World Championships. USAD holds only amateur competitions. These competitions are judged by Pros. NDCA is the governing body for professionals. Their competitions have both amateur and professional events. NDCA chooses world representatives for the Pro World events. Here's a couple of calendars: http://www.usadance.org/dancesport/competition-calendar/ http://www.ndca.org/events.cfm?showsection=events Due in part to political infighting between the two organizations neither org lists the other's competitions on their competition calendar.
