Foxtrot Project

does anyone still dance like they did in the 1940's?

I am curious does any place in South Australia that holds dances (cabarets) where the traditional social foxtrots and waltz's (non-scripted dances) are danced? Also does anyone know of any place that teaches this style of dance. All I have been able to find is sequence dancing, and this is totally unsuitable for most people on a dance floor where some are doing scripted dances and others doing the basic steps. Also do people only dance sequence (scripted) dances nowadays?

  1. We do in South Austin, but I'm not so sure that will help you in South Australia. For the potential inspiration, what we do here is have dance clubs and mixers in our community centers (not to be confused with bars) where we teach and share all the out-of-fashion dances. Of course, in whatever moment in history, there are ALLOT of out-of-fashion dances, so sometimes the clubs focus on one or more branch of them, such as Swing, Ball-room, etc.
  2. We do in chicago illinois. some good memories from that class... No, but I think that people like to know exactly what their looking at.
  3. I'm in Southern California (OC) and I *used* to be a professional swing dancer... I did all the ballroom dances, and I was self-learned/self-taught. I did it for 6 years... then I got married! I still love dancing, but I rarely do it. I did Swing (east, west, street, and lindy), Foxtrot, Ballroom, Salsa, ChaCha... basically everything you'd see on Dancing with the Stars, but I never took a class! Look online, there are definitely lots of sites and message boards that will help you find what you're looking for.. and if you can find it, ask around! People are so friendly and helpful when you're looking to do something they're interested in! :) Good Luck!!
  4. there's lots of ballroom dancing in Australia--that's what you need to google. Some of the places focus on scripted, but some don't.
  5. I've never visited Australia, but we in the US are grateful you've produced ballroom babes like Kym Johnson for us to ogle. Obviously, there's ballroom dancing Down Under, and the modification from ballroom to social foxtrot and waltz is not much. We have the same phenomenon in the US in terms of places to dance, though. The space of the old dance floors is expensive real estate, and the places that had dance floors in the old days discovered the vast majority of their income was from the drinks they were selling, so the dance floors have been converted to extra spots for tables. With diligence, I'm sure you can find a few spots, though.
